Following our recent Facebook post about the work the Lyde Green Community Association (LGCA) have been doing to make sure that the community centre is the best it can possibly be, we’re delighted to announce that we have been chosen by South Gloucestershire Council to be the operator for Lyde Green Community Centre!
This is the result of a huge amount of hard work by volunteers over the past year. We’ve had to go through a selection process and submit a full business plan to South Gloucestershire Council – it’s taken a lot of time and effort. For a bunch of volunteers this is a gr.at achievement, and we’re so pleased with how far we’ve come! A big thank you to everyone who has helped us with the work so far!

At the end of May 2017, Trustees were able visit the Community Centre site alongside representatives from the Council and Developers.

It was great to see how the build was coming along and we even got to wear hard hats and hi-vis jackets!

What’s Next?

We’ll be negotiating the lease and its terms with South Gloucestershire Council before the building can be handed over later this year. If you have any legal experience or experience in negotiating contracts, please get in touch as we need support with this important step. The hall build is coming along and we expect it will be complete in Autumn 2017. This isn’t it, however, as just like a new house it will need decorating and furnishing too! We’ll be looking for help with DIY and kitting out the hall – let us know if you would be prepared to help with this!

We’ll also be recruiting for a Community Development and Centre Manager to run the hall. The job advert for this will be posted very soon. If you’d like to find out more information about this role or our recruitment process, please email us at lydegreencommunityhall@gmail.com.

We anticipate that our Community Centre will be officially open for residents to use in early 2018. We plan to begin taking our first bookings towards the end of 2017.
It’s Your Centre

We’ve carried out some initial surveys with residents and potential hirers to help guide our thinking. We’ve heard your views on a range of topics, including how you’d like to use the space. You told us you would use a café at your new Community Centre so we’ve worked with South Gloucestershire Council to ensure the Centre has the right facilities for this. We’ll be searching for our café operator from October and hope to get residents involved in this stage. We’re planning to have a community panel at interview stage so residents can have a say in who runs our new café – let us know if you would like to be involved!

We’re thinking of running a photography competition to use residents’ photographs of the area to decorate the walls, and getting your suggestions for room names inside the hall – what do you think?

Our Community Centre Survey is still open and there is also our Community Consultation Survey about Life in Lyde Green which is available to complete. Please take a moment to fill these in if you haven’t already, we’d be very grateful to hear from you.

Most importantly: the Centre is for the benefit of everyone living in Lyde Green so if you have any ideas or suggestions, or if you can help us make it the best it can be, please get in touch!

Get Involved

We’ll be running an open event in the upcoming months to get the views of as many residents as possible so watch this space!

The LGCA is run entirely by volunteers (with help from advisors) and we still have a lot of hard work ahead to get the Community Centre up and running. Money and volunteer hours are in short supply so we need all the help we can get from the community!

There’s still plenty of time to get involved and tasks to suit everyone! If you would be able to help in any way, however big or small, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you!
